A Morning Full of Surprises

“Believe it or not, you’re not the only one who suddenly has new and different memories. I’m positive about that. And it’s also not just us that had different yesterdays than what people believe were their true yesterdays,” Jean answered. “As for why I wasn’t affected and you weren’t…I’m still trying to figure that out.”

Within seconds of her ending her reply she felt a quick surge of pain rush to her head. Wincing at it, she raised her hand to rub her forehead again and took a few deep breaths to try to calm herself. Her headache was much more intense now and her eyes felt as if they were burning. Closing them for a moment as she waited for the feelings of agony to subside, she opened them again and then allowed her hand to lightly stroked Logan’s.

“I can tell you more if you like,” she said trying to sound strong but, much to her disappointment, having a hint of discomfort in her voice.

Logan noticed Jean’s wince of pain. As much as he wanted to here more he could ask about that later. He needed to make sure that Jean was alright first.

“Are you ok love? A headache is it? You always did get those a lot. Would you like me to get you something for it?”

Sniffling, she lifted her head up slowly again to look at Logan. Gently rubbing his shoulder with her hand, she kissed him on the cheek again and said, “I know it hurts. It hurts me too, but you should also know that even… even if she’s not real in the world that we’re used to, she’s still real in here.”

Jean then lowered her other hand and gently placed it over his heart.

“It also doesn’t mean that she can’t ever be either…” she said giving him a small hopeful smile. “And those memories aren’t nothing, Logan. They mean something. Even if…given the circumstances, they’re not…just know that you’re still you. I know it. I can sense it and that doesn’t mean you have to forget her or not care for those memories either. They’re going to stay with you. I’m sure of it. I just wish…I just wish I had those same ones too.”

“Why do I have these memories anyway? How come I’m affected and you’re not? Why don’t I remember yesterday the same as you do?”

Logan was trying to keep his mind off the fact that he had just learned that the daughter he had loved and cared for all her life wasn’t even real. It was one of those surreal moments when you doubt the existence of everything around you, even yourself.

Hearing Logan’s words and understanding how difficult it was for him to listen to everything she had explained so far and had yet to explain, Jean tried to respond, but it was no use at that moment. Tears formed in her eyes and she found herself feeling a sharp pain in her chest. She gently rested her head on his shoulder and gave a small nod.

Feeling Jean nod against his shoulder, Logan tightened his grip around Jean’s waist. Words couldn’t describe the pain he felt in his heart, he knew Jean was telling the truth. Part of him knew this was all true but he still had all those memories of Charlotte. The little girl sleeping in the next room meant the world to him. To even think that he had lived a life devoid of her hurt too much.

Watching Logan sit on the bed and seeing his arms spread out for her, a small smile crept on her face as she walked towards him and sat on his lap. Wrapping her arms around his neck, and giving him a tender kiss on the cheek, she was silent for a moment before she she started to speak.

“I know that what you’re going to hear from me is going to sound ridiculous and unbelievable, but I promise you I’m only telling the truth. I have no reason to lie to you and if I can somehow prove that what I’m saying to you is completely honest, then I will,” she said quietly before pausing briefly again. “You and me, Logan, we’re real. We’re very real. However, everything else around us isn’t. It’s not real at all. Not real compared to what the real world is like.”

Logan listened her quietly, pulling Jean closer onto his lap. He struggled to believe what he was hearing. How could nothing except for them exist? Although some small part of his mind knew that she was speaking the truth. As he started to come to terms with this in him mind something occurred to him.

“Does that mean… that.. Charlotte…..”

He couldn’t say any more.
